Every year brings a new crop of picture books, but only a handful linger in my mind long after I've closed the cover. These are the books I've found myself recommending, thinking about, and returning to again and again throughout 2026 so far. Some are laugh-out-loud funny. Some are beautiful, surprising, or deeply heartfelt. Others are wonderfully strange in the very best way. Together, they represent some of the most memorable, engaging, and delightful picture books I've read this year—and I can't wait to see what the rest of 2026 has in store.

Shrinking Violet

by Laurel Snyder

Shrinking Violet is a magical and uplifting tale about a girl whose size changes with her emotions. Whenever Violet feels frightened, she literally becomes smaller, making it even harder to face the challenges in front of her. But when someone she cares about needs help, Violet must find the courage to confront her fears and discover that bravery isn't about never feeling afraid—it's about acting even when you are. With imaginative storytelling and expressive illustrations by LeUyen Pham, this modern fairy tale offers a powerful message about courage, resilience, and the strength that can be found within even the smallest among us.

Crouton

by Kristine Lombardi

This sweet story offers a delightful twist on the traditional pet adoption story. Told from the perspective of a shelter cat, Crouton patiently waits for the perfect person to adopt—not the other way around. When she finally finds the little girl she's been searching for, Crouton takes her new responsibilities very seriously, making sure her human is well cared for every step of the way. Filled with warmth, humor, and adorable illustrations, this heartwarming story celebrates pet adoption, companionship, and the special bond between animals and the people they choose.

Bored

by Felicita Sala

Bored is a wonderfully imaginative picture book that begins with a familiar childhood complaint: Rita is bored. Really, really bored. After exhausting every possible way to entertain herself, her wandering mind drifts into an increasingly wild and whimsical daydream, transforming boredom into an unexpected adventure. With expressive illustrations, offbeat humor, and boundless creativity, Sala celebrates the idea that boredom isn't something to be feared or fixed—it can be the spark that leads to imagination, invention, and discovery. A delightful reminder that some of childhood's best ideas begin when there's seemingly nothing to do.

The Future Book

by Mac Barnett + Shawn Harris

A wildly imaginative picture book that invites readers to take a peek into the future—where many familiar things are still around, but almost everything has a different name. In this strange and hilarious world, bananas are called apples, the sun and moon have swapped identities, and saying goodbye might involve telling someone they smell like a baby. As increasingly absurd customs, words, and inventions are introduced, the story playfully explores how language and culture can change over time while reminding readers that some parts of everyday life remain surprisingly familiar. Paired with Shawn Harris's vibrant, energetic illustrations, this inventive read-aloud is packed with humor, creativity, and plenty of unexpected surprises.

Seahorse is Furious (And There is Nothing You Can Do About It)

by Morag Hood

A hilarious and surprisingly relatable picture book about a seahorse who is having a truly terrible day—and is determined to stay furious about it. As his friends offer suggestions, distractions, and attempts to cheer him up, Seahorse stubbornly insists that nothing will make him feel better. With expressive illustrations and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, this charming story perfectly captures the experience of being stuck in a bad mood, even when everyone around you is trying to help. Parents of young children may find the scenario especially familiar, as the story gently hints at a truth many caregivers eventually learn: sometimes the biggest feelings have surprisingly simple solutions. Funny, warm, and full of personality, it's a delightful reminder that a little rest, connection, comfort—or perhaps even a snack—can go a long way.

Kitty Caterpillar

by Annabeth Bondor-Stone and Connor White

A charming and laugh-out-loud picture book about a caterpillar who is perfectly content with her cozy life as a beloved house kitty. Between delicious meals, afternoon naps, and cuddles with her favorite human, Hazel, Kitty Caterpillar has everything she could want—until a glimpse of the outdoors sparks her curiosity. As she sets off to explore the wider world, Kitty discovers exciting adventures, unexpected surprises, and an important truth about friendship and belonging. Brought to life with Brigette Barrager's bright, expressive illustrations, this delightful story is equal parts funny, heartwarming, and wonderfully whimsical.

The Outermost Mouse

by Lauren Wolk

When a fierce storm threatens the tiny seaside home she loves, one brave little mouse refuses to leave without a fight. What follows is a tender and beautifully told story about courage, resilience, and the deep attachment we feel to the places that shape us. Paired with stunning illustrations that capture both the power of nature and the warmth of home, this moving picture book is a gentle reminder that even the smallest among us can weather life's biggest storms.

The Sweater

by Larissa Theule

When a frightened little bird arrives in the thicket just as winter approaches, a community of woodland animals comes together to help him feel safe, welcome, and cared for. Through small acts of kindness, shared gifts, and quiet compassion, they show that no contribution is too small when it comes to helping a neighbor in need. Paired with Teagan White's breathtaking illustrations, this tender story is a beautiful celebration of empathy, belonging, and the extraordinary things that can happen when a community chooses to care for one another.

Exca-Gator!

by Brooke Hartman

What begins as a simple excavation quickly turns into a hilarious adventure when an enthusiastic alligator digs up far more than anyone expected. Packed with clever wordplay, laugh-out-loud surprises, and Michael Slack's wonderfully expressive illustrations, this wildly entertaining read-aloud keeps the jokes coming from start to finish. Equal parts silly and smart, it's the kind of picture book that has kids giggling through the first reading and asking for it again as soon as it's over.

See You Later...

by April Suddendorf

Apparently alligators are having a moment in picture books, because I somehow ended up with two on this list! Fortunately, they're both hilarious for completely different reasons. Convinced that life in a grand human house must be far better than life in a muddy swamp, one adventurous alligator sets out in search of luxury—only to discover that things aren't always as perfect as they seem. Filled with hilarious visual gags, charming details, and a wonderfully expressive reptilian hero, this clever picture book delivers plenty of laughs while celebrating the comforts of home. With a perfectly timed ending and illustrations packed with details to pore over, it's a story that rewards repeat readings and leaves readers grinning.
